The Chemistry of Behavior

By Dr. Roch

Behaviors are the key to everything you are and achieve. But did you know that they are determined by your brain chemistry? Your glands produce neurotransmitters that influence how you you feel, think and act.

Careful! The behaviors you repeat stimulate (or block) these chemicals, defining your results. Understanding this process helps you be a better person and achieve more success —a topic I address in my talks productivity and effective leadership.

The 4 Key Neurotransmitters

1. Dopamine 🎯 (The Motivation Molecule)

  • Function: Pleasure, reward and focus.
  • It is released to: Achieving goals, receiving recognition, or learning something new.
  • How to activate it:
✔ Establishes small goals and celebrate them.
    ✔ Try challenging activities.

2. Oxytocin 💞 (The love hormone)

  • Function: Emotional connection and trust.
  • It is released to: Hugging, having deep conversations, or helping others.
  • How to activate it:
✔ Practice gestures of affection (a hug, a kind word).
✔ Share quality time with those you care about.

3. Serotonin ☀️ (The happiness hormone)

  • Function: Regulates mood, sleep and calm.
  • It is released to: Expose yourself to the sun, exercise or meditate.
  • How to activate it:
✔ Walk 15 minutes in the sun.
✔ Eat foods rich in tryptophan (chocolate, banana, eggs).

4. Endorphins 🏃‍♂️ (Natural painkillers)

  • Function: They reduce stress and generate euphoria.
  • They are released to: Laugh, dance or play sports.
  • How to activate them:
Laugh out loud (watch a comedy, tell jokes).
✔ Dance or do intense exercise.

Conclusion

You decide which chemistry will dominate your day. Small actions—like a hug, a goal accomplished, or a walk— change your brain and your results.
