The 7 qualities of a true leader

A true leader is not defined by the position he holds or the title he holds. The true essence of a leader is revealed through his qualities and actions. Below are the seven essential characteristics that distinguish a true leader. Reflect on whether you possess these skills and share your thoughts on the article with me.

1. They create a safe environment for free expression

True leaders don't use their titles or ranks to intimidate. They ensure that, regardless of experience or position within the organization, a climate is fostered in which all employees can express their opinions freely and without fear. Creating a safe environment for open and honest discussion is critical.

2. They make difficult decisions, not just popular ones

Effective leaders are able to make decisions that are sometimes popular and sometimes not so popular. They prevent teams from falling into vicious circles and unnecessary waste of time. They encourage constructive dialogue and, when necessary, make crucial decisions, either by delegating power or taking responsibility directly.

3. They challenge the thinking of others in a constructive way

Successful leaders use their knowledge, experience and intuition to challenge and expand the thinking of their teams. They take them out of their comfort zone and push them to think outside the box, to argue soundly and coherently. They foster a free and safe environment that promotes innovation, critical thinking and respectful debate.

4. They lead with coherence

Consistent leaders understand that they are being watched and approach their work with humility and responsibility. They recognize their role as role models and manage the guidance of their teams with maturity and balance. Consistency between what they say and do is vital to gaining and maintaining the trust of their team.

5. They reward both the results and the process

A true leader knows that it is important to reward results, but he also values effort and hard work, even if the expected goals are not achieved. This duality in reward is crucial to maintaining motivation and stimulating continuous effort towards improvement.

6. They ask questions and seek feedback

Leaders aren't afraid to ask questions and don't actively seek out constructive criticism. While others may view them as know-it-alls, true leaders step down from that pedestal and humbly acknowledge themselves as eternal learners. They are always willing to listen and learn from others.

7. They invest in relationships and value their professional brand

A genuine leader is dedicated to elevating other leaders, naturally expanding their sphere of influence. This strategy not only strengthens their personal and professional brand, but also expands their negotiating capabilities for future relocation opportunities or side hustles. An effective leader never forgets that they are both a professional and a person.

Remember: If you are in a leadership position, aspire to be a true leader. If you would like to delve deeper into this topic, I invite you to join me at my retreat at this year’s Leaders Summit.

How many of these seven qualities do you see in yourself and your boss? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
