WHY DO YOU YELL AT A PERSON WHEN YOU ARE ANGRY?

A Tibetan story tells that one day an old sage asked his followers the following question:

-Why do people shout at each other when they are angry?

The men thought for a moment:

-Because we lose our temper,- said one,- that’s why we shout.

-But… Why shout when the other person is standing next to you? – asked the wise man – Isn’t it possible to speak to him in a low voice? Why do you shout at a person when you are angry?

The men gave some other answers, but none of them satisfied the sage.

Finally, he explained:

-When two people are angry, their hearts are far apart.

To bridge that distance, they have to shout in order to hear each other.

The angrier they are, the louder they have to shout to hear each other over that great distance.

Then the sage continued:

– What happens when two people fall in love?

They do not shout at each other, but speak softly.

Why is that? Their hearts are very close. The distance between them is very small.

The wise man smiled and said:

– If they fall more in love… What happens?

They don’t talk, they just whisper, and they become even closer in their love.

Eventually they don’t even have to whisper, they just look at each other and that’s it.

That’s how close two people are when they love each other.

Then he said:

When you quarrel, do not let your hearts drift apart.

Do not say words that drive you further apart.

The day may come when the distance will be so great that you will not find your way back.
